Description
The Old Schoolhouse is in the quiet village of Commondale on the coastal side of the North Yorkshire Moors. The building was originally the home of the village schoolteacher, and has been tastefully converted into 4 holiday apartments. The owners live in the adjacent building which was Commondale school.
Tranquil and picturesque Commondale has an art gallery, a rural pub,(no meals) and also a campsite for scouts and guides who wish to experience country life. One of the nearby farms, Fowle Green, sells free range eggs and Angus beef, and has a tearoom.
The Esk Valley train which travels between Middlesbrough and Whitby stops at Commondale station which is just 15 mins walk from The Old Schoolhouse. Although the service is limited, this is an excellent way to travel to Whitby, or to Grosmont to pick up the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
Castleton village is approximately 2.5 miles away and can be reached by a bridlepath. Most amenities are available here e.g.late opening general store, post office with cash machine, hairdressers, tea room, 2 pubs serving meals, newspapers, art shop, petrol station.
A good place to start your holiday is at the nearby Danby Moors Centre which is also a Tourist Information Centre. (Approx 5miles from Commondale)
The York apartment has:2 double bedrooms
Living room/kitchen with breakfast bar
Shower room with toilet and wash basin
An automatic washing machine and tumble dryer are available in an outhouse.
The Old Schoolhouse is situated partway up Sandhill Bank and therefore has excellent views of the village, farmland and moorland. The view constantly changes with the seasons
Please note: There is no mobile phone signal in Commondale, so if you really want to, "get away from it all", this is a good place for your holiday. |

Sometimes given the nickname of “God’s Own County” thanks to its lush green countryside and wild expanses of moor land, Yorkshire is the largest county in England. It is home to over 800 attractions, from breweries to museums, castles to zoos, and World Heritage Sites to breathtaking rides. There are many popular seaside resorts along its coastline, including Whitby, Bridlington and Scarborough, as well as quieter villages and working harbours nestled among the rugged cliffs. The North York Moors, the Yorkshire Dales and part of the Peak District National Park offer wonderful opportunities for walkers, cyclists and climbers, as well as nature reserves for bird spotters and naturalists. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway carries more passengers than any other heritage railway in the UK and the National Railway Museum is to be found in the county capital city, York.
